GAMES TO WATCH -- WEEK 5

SAN JOSE STATE [3-1, 0-0 WAC] @ NAVY [1-2, Independent] - Upstart Spartans make long Eastern trek to meet Midshipmen in Annapolis.  

San Jose State won its 3rd straight game last Saturday, turning back San Diego State 38-34 in first road win of season.   Navy cracked win column for 1st time with 41-3 rout of VMI.   Spartans have first 3-game win streak since 2008.   They are also playing in Eastern time zone for first time since 2003 contest @ Florida.   SJSU is averaging 35.0 points/game and in each of last two games has scored on four TD passes; seven of eight have come from QB DAVID FALES [95-132-1,123-9 TD-2 INT], a transfer from Monterey Peninsula College.   His favored targets are WRs NOEL GRIGSBY [22-321-2 TD] & JABARI CARR [22-244-2]  Third wideout CHANDLER JONES has 13 catches, 5 for TD.  Defensively, San Jose State ranks 4th nationally in QB sacks with 17 in 4 contests; a year ago, Spartans managed just 16 for the season.   DE TRAVIS JOHNSON leads the nation in career QB sacks, racking up 24.0 in 41 career games.   The Spartan-Mids matchup will feature pair of brothers going head-to-head.  PAUL QUESSENBERRY is soph DE for Navy who has 5 tackles & 0.5 sack; he'll collide with brother DAVID QUESSENBERRY, senior OT for San Jose State who has 27 starts in 39 games and is one of 4 Spartan team captains.   Navy seeks to reverse disturbing trend as Mids already have 10 turnovers [8 lost fumbles, 2 INTs] compared to just 15 [9 lost fumbles, 6 INTs] in all of 2011.   Under HC KEN NIUMATALOLO, Mids own 16-6 record at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.   The Series:  The teams met for the first time last year; San Jose State defeated Navy 27-24 in San Jose and in so doing, knocked Midshipmen out of a bowl game and ended Navy's 8-season run of playing in the postseason.  Last Meeting:   2011, San Jose State 27, Navy 24 in San Jose, CA.   Kickoff:   12:30 p.m. [PDT]/3:30 p.m. [EDT].   TV:  CBS Sports Network [national cable].

 

OREGON STATE [2-0, 1-0 Pac-12] @ ARIZONA [3-1, 0-1 Pac-12] -- Beavers hit road for 2nd straight week following upset victory at UCLA.   Wildcats try to get back to winning ways after absorbing shutout loss to conference leader Oregon.   Rejuvenated Beavers offense piloted by soph QB SEAN MANNION [53-82-655-3 TD, 1 INT].   Oregon State wideouts MARKUS WHEATON [17-237-1 TD] & BRANDIN COOKS [12-255-2 TD] were standouts in OSU win over Bruins in Rose Bowl.  Cooks leads all Pac-12 receivers in reception yardage, averaging 127.5 over 2 starts.  Beavers have not lost in Tucson since 1997 and own 5-game win streak over last 14 years.  OSU is playing just its third game, having had its opener v Nicholls State postponed [hurricane]; it will be played only if necessary in December.   Both Beaver wins have come over ranked teams [Wisconsin, UCLA].   Arizona senior QB MATT SCOTT [110-167-1,205-7 TD-4 INT] trails only Mannion in Pac-12 pass average.  They are lone conference QBs averaging more than 300 pass yards per game in early going.   Soph RB KA'DEEM CAREY [80-423-5 TD] is 3rd-leading Pac-12 rusher behind UCLA's Jonathan Franklin and Stanford's Stepfan Taylor.   Cats senior WR DAN BUCKNER [25-303-1 TD] is Arizona's leading receiver.   The Series:   14th meeting in series that began in 1978.   Oregon State has won 11 times to 2 for Arizona.   Last Meeting:  2011, Oregon State 37, Arizona 27 in Corvallis, OR.   Last Arizona win:  2009, 37-32, at Corvallis, OR.   Kickoff:   7:00 p.m. [PDT]/10:00 p.m. {EDT].  TV:  Pac-12 Networks [regional cable].
